We need a king - 1 Samuel 7:1-8:22

Father we stray from you,
And we seek other gods with all our hearts.
We seek fame, comfort, leisure, money, sport, control, happiness and esteem.
May we return to you and serve you alone
·     Run only ever towards you
·     Desire only to listen to you
·     Seek your fame
·     Suffer your death
·     Be spent in the advance of your kingdom
·     And be secure in the shadow of your wings.
We have sinned against your greatness
And so today we cry out to you for your salvation knowing that you are Ebenezer - the LORD who helps us.

Life with Money - Materialism

Father,
Our hearts want more.
Our lives are full of our possessions,
They consume our money;
Our time;
Our thoughts;
And our dreams.
We are fearful that they will be removed;
Fearful that you will not supply;
Fearful of want;
When we should be fearful of missing you;
And fearful of eternity.
Transform our thinking.
Make us to question our assumptions.
And repent of our inner values.
Grow our generosity.
Stretch our gratitude.
Simplify our lives.
Give us financial modesty.
And fill us with contentment.
For your glory alone

Deuteronomy 11:1-32

Father,
May we consider your discipline.
May we remember your greatness, your mighty hand and your outstretched arm.
May we marvel in your deeds of salvation and your deeds of severity.
May we keep your commandments and in so doing experience your strength and your blessing.
Keep us from being deceived and turning aside to other gods.
May we lay up your words in our hearts that our days may be long.
May we be careful to do your commands,
   Loving you,
   Walking in your ways,
   And holding fast to you;
As we experience your blessing.

Deuteronomy 7:1-26

Father
My heart is restless;
Quick to drift;
Slow to remember;
Radically committed to my own agenda;
Utterly self-seeking!
Keep my heart;
Change my heart;
Retrain my heart.
Give me an earnestness of commitment;
A wariness of people and things that will entice me away from you.
Burn in my soul that I am holy, chosen and treasured; loved, blessed and redeemed.
Remind me that you are a God who is faithful and steadfast;
Who keeps his promises
And destroys those that hate you.
Thank you for the promise of your presence in the midst of my fears and trials.
Be with me today and always.
Amen

Deuteronomy 5:6-22

Our Father you have rescued us from our slavery.
You have rescued us to be your loved people.
May our hearts be exclusively devoted to you.
May our lives be centred on loving you.
May we rest in you and remember you.
May we love others, seeking their best.
May our selfish desires be turned into sacrificial love.
As we taste the sweetness of being loved by you!

Amen

A Surprising God; A Surprising Life

Our Father
You are a God whose son dies that we might live;
A God who gives that we might get;
   Who serves that we might be saved;
   Who speaks that we might know you;
   Who empties himself that we might be filled;
   Who suffers that we might escape pain;
   Who pays that we might be ransomed;
   Who substitutes that we might be forgiven;
   Who declares us righteous though we are not!

If we choose to live we die.
If we seek ourselves, we lose our souls.
If we serve our desires, we lose our hearts.
As we hold, we lose,
As we take, we weep,
As we lash out, we hurt ourselves,
As we worry, we fear,
As we strive, we miss,
As we serve ourselves, we become lonely,
As we become rich, we become poor,
And as we find ease, we find emptiness.

But if like you we die, then we live,
As we give, then we get,
As we suffer, we find joy,
As we serve, we find purpose,
As we forgive, we find peace,
As we submit, we find freedom,
As we live outwardly, we find inner healing,
As we pray, we are protected.

Father in the light of the cross give us your Spirit.
Change us to
   Sow love where there is hatred;
   Peace where there is war;
   Grace where there is hurt;
   Faith where there is doubt;
   Hope where there is despair;
   Light where there is darkness;
  Joy where there is sadness;
  And life where there is death.

Amen

My Selfishness

Father,
    You are good,
    Your love endures forever,
    Your faithfulness continues from generation to generation.

But I am selfish, addicted to my own happiness, unable to see beyond my own desires.
Give me eyes that see and a heart that grieves what I do to others in my selfishness.
Give me your Spirit to transform my will.
Keep me persevering towards Christlikeness in the face of my stubborn selfishness.
And give me a heart that is ever fixed on Christ - my Saviour and my God.
Amen

James 4:6

Father,
Give me a submissive will.
Strengthen me to resist the devil.
Draw me near to your heart.
Cleanse my hands.
Purify my heart.
Keep me from double-mindedness.
Turn my laughter to repentance.
Turn my frivolity to mourning
And humble me before you.
Amen

Known by God

Father, I pray for desire.
The desire to love and serve you.
The desire to sacrifice for your glory.
The desire to give and to be used up for your kingdom.
The desire to serve and love people.

May I grow in maturity,
Seeking holiness,
dispensing with sin,
pressing on towards the day when I will see you face to face

May I be willing to share
Share Christ with a lost and dying world
Share what I have with those who have little

May your Spirit change me this year
so that in the future I will not be what I am but what you desire

Saved by your Son
Salt and light to the world
A loved member of your precious bride
Known by You

Amen
